What Happened to the American Dream? How the Dream Is Dying As Election Results Come In
In the last months, the American dream is increasingly collapsing, ravaged by the pandemic, job losses, business failures, and now an especially divisive election, which is marked by voter intimidation and suppression and the threat of ongoing lawsuits to determine the victor along with continuing civil unrest. At one time, the transition from one office holder to another was assumed to go peacefully in the spirit of fair play, but now that is being challenged, too.
These mounting problems inspired What Happened to the American Dream? a popular song about the many threats to American society and democracy that we are facing today. The song is now featured on many popular music platforms from Twitch and TikTok to Spotify and Amazon Music. You can listen to it on YouTube at https://youtu.be/mOC1BPW80D4.
Here’s the chorus:
What ever happened to the American dream?
It was supposed to be liberty and justice for all.
But now all of that seems like just a myth,
So many lose work as the economy falls.
The song is one of a series, which I have been writing about everyday life today and fighting the pandemic. These have been collected into a songbook featuring a dozen of these songs: What Happened to the American Dream.
