Getting noticed by the media is a big problem today if you aren’t already famous and don’t have big bucks for a high-profile advertising campaign. So how do you do it if you have a new book, film, or unique product or service?

One strategy is to get featured in the local media, which gets picked up nationally. But that’s a long shot — first getting a local article and then getting national attention.

Another approach is getting a social media influencer to pay attention, such as by sending a copy of the book, a link to the film, a product sample, or a link to a video of you performing the service. Then, you can hope for the best, though it’s far from a sure shot.

Plus there’s the PR strategy of sending a series of releases and articles to reporters, talk show producers, podcast hosts, and others in the media. Generally, a single release will be ignored. But if you continue to send a release every four to seven days, you might get through the awareness and attention barrier, so media people will finally become aware of you. They’ll read your release; they’ll open up your links. Then, if they like what they see, you may get an interview that features whatever you have to offer.
