The Ups and Downs of Everyday Life

Since I have written and recorded over 60 songs about how to best respond to the everyday challenges of the new normal and about current social issues, I decided to turn them into a series of blogs about everyday life. The songs are recorded and uploaded onto YouTube, so you can listen to them, and they are also books featuring a collection of these songs.

The first song is The Ups and Downs of Everyday Life. I wrote this after seeing the many mood swings that people go through, as we have faced an unusual sameness of these days of full or partial lock-down. Such ups and downs occur normally, as we experience all kinds of challenges every day, from achieving a goal to dealing with different incidents that are favorable or unfavorable, like the changing winds in the skies hitting the boat in the sea. But what makes them more difficult for many is the sameness of the days, like a regular 24-hour ritual. On the one hand they may seem more placid given the more routine quality of these days with less highs and lows, like a quiet surface of the water. But on the other hand, the feeling of isolation can trigger deeper feelings, which can churn below the surface, much like a calm ocean can serve as a cover from a circling shark who suddenly erupts, ready to bite.

Thus, I wrote the first song in this spirit. I hope you like it, and you can click the link below to listen to it on YouTube in real time.

VERSE Think of life like a wave that goes up and down,

Or a merry-go-round that goes around and ‘round.

It keeps on going, and it never stops.

You feel down in the dumps or way up on top.

CHORUS Ups and downs, that’s the way life goes.

It’s always changing, so you never know

What will happen, cause the best of plans,

Can sometimes change, like shifting sands.

VERSE So you’ve got to adapt, go with life’s flow.

You gotta roll with the punches, that’s how life goes.

Then you push yourself up, again and again,

’Cause the highs follow lows, you don’t always know when.

CHORUS Ups and downs, that’s the way life goes.

It’s always changing, so you never know

What will happen, cause the best of plans,

Can sometimes change, like shifting sands.

BRIDGE I had so many plans of what I would do.

Then destiny came and they all went askew.

So I had to change and do something new.

If it happened to me, it can happen to you.

CHORUS Ups and downs, that’s the way life goes.

It’s always changing, so you never know

What will happen, cause the best of plans,

Can sometimes change, like shifting sands.
